Greed, selfishness, and avarice, or scrupulousness, are some of the most common defects among people in the world. But history of mankind produced some really greedy, rapacious  characters. They reached the paroxysm of greed, forgetting the simple fact that life on this earth is just ephemeral ...

Let's see a top of the most greedy people in history:
1) Marcus Licinius Crassus (115 BC - 53 BC)

While Marcus Crassus was still a young man became obsessed with wealth which will make the main feature of his character. He rented land and bought slaves just to trade them later on a better price. An inexhaustible source of enrichment for Crassus was offered by Rome's difficulty in providing housing for everyone. Ancient Rome was overcrowded and buildings extremely exposed to fire which was one of the most frequent causes for having entire neighborhoods destroyed. But this situation was favorable for speculation. Crassus had organized teams of firefighters, saving the houses from fire and then he bought the burned houses for a small price and after some reparations he rented them. Greed proved fatal to him as Crassus got killed during a disastrous military campaign when he wanted to conquer the Kingdom of Parthia, famous for its wealth.


2) Ghenghis Khan (1162-1227)




Great Mongol Khan wanted to hold everyone, and was about to achieve his dream.Before his death, his empire stretched from the Pacific Ocean to the Adriatic.


3) Pope Sixtus IV (1414-1484)



The Pope was greatly enriched by the fact that he imposed taxes to the brothels and claimed that the souls in purgatory can go to paradise if indulgences for the dead are bought by their living relatives.


4) William H. Vanderbilt (1821-1884)



Vanderbilt was an american rich man of the nineteenth century who was perhaps the richest and most powerful man of his times. He controlled the largest rail network in the world and became famous with his famous words: "The public be damned.! I only care about my property. "


5) William M. Tweed (1823-1878)



Tweed was a land owner in New York but also had banks, railways and hotels. His fortune, in terms of value today would be around 8 billion dollars so far. But he was famous for his avarice and greed, many cartoons of the time being made on the subject of this "flaw" of his.


6) The Empress Dowager Cixi (1835-1908)




Although she started her "career" as the whore of the Chinese Emperor, meanwhile she managed to become "de facto" the head of this large Asian country for nearly 50 years. She became famous for the 3,000 boxes of jewelry she owned and used the money of the Chinese Navy to build a marble boat where she was dining using 150 golden chop sticks.


7) Charles Ponzi (1882-1949)




He was one of the greatest American crooks of all time. He was the creator of so-called "Ponzi schemes" which doubles the money originally deposited in 3 months. Greedy to make money from whatever was immeasurable.


8) Imelda Marcos (1929)



Tagalog wife of President Ferdinand Marcos, is suspected of having stolen, along with her husband over 5 billion dollars of wealth Philippines. When she and her husband have been deposed from power in 1986, authorities found in Imelda's lockers in Malacañang (presidential palace) over 3000 pairs of shoes, size 37. Imelda's extravagance was beyond any acceptable limit. During an expedition to purchase real estate in New York, she decided to buy the Empire State Building, but eventually gave up. Evaluated at about $750 million, the building did not exceed her financial possibilities, but she said it was an acquisition too glaring. " Instead, she spent fifty-one to get Crown Building and sixty million for Herald Center and two other apartments in Manhattan.

Alice Huffman, president of the NAACP, the main organization for the protection of civil rights of African-Americans, criticized the picture and demanded the resignation of its author, Marilyn Davenport, a member of the Orange County Republican Party Committee (south of Los Angeles) and current member of the ultra-conservative "TeaParty. " "Representing the President of the United States otherwise than as a human being can only be considered racist," she said in a statement.


Two other civil rights associations have joined the critics and asked Davenport's resignation.The image distributed by e-mail has the following caption: "Now you know why — No birth certificate!" a reference to the republican movement that questions Obama's birth in the United States.



On Monday night, Davenport and apologized, but without resigning. "To all my fellow citizens and all persons who have seen the e-mail and felt offended, I humbly apologize for my reckless behavior." 

Republicans ensure that it is "an imperfect Christian who tries to give you the best in it to glorify Christ" and promised not to ever make the "same mistake". According to one of his fellow Republicans, Davenport had received death threats after this discussion. Orange County Republican Committee, Chairman Scott Baugh, strongly condemned the message to his colleague. He warned, however, that California law prohibits it from a removal from office.
"All I can do is to adopt a resolution condemning his actions and to persuade him to apologize and resign," he said.

Initially, Davenport responded to the emergence of a jocular tone of this case in the local press. "You will not make a scandal out of it, right? But finally! All people who know me also know I'm not racist. It was a joke. I have colored friends," she told the Orange County Weekly newspaper.

The Top Worst April Fool's Day Practical Jokes Ever

1. Hussein's Supplies

Former Iraqi dictator was terrible, blood thirsty, but that didn't prevent him from trying to offer his people a good laugh every year on April Fool's Day. On 1st of April, 1998 the official newspaper, owned by dictator's son Udday, announced the public that US President Bill Clinton had decided to lift penalties against Iraq, only to admit later that it was just a joke. One can easily imagine the knee slapping guffaws when people realized how they had been fooled. The chuckles continued one year later when Udday mischeviously informed that the monthly food rations will be supplemented to include free fruits, Coca Cola, and chocolate. Once more, just a joke. This time, the dictator appear to exhaust his practical jokes, because in 2000 he recycled the sanction lifting gag, and one year later launched out the ration supplement crowd pleaser again. The insistence with which the same joke was repeated several years had an almost surreal quality to it. In fact, it almost makes one sympathize with Saudi Arabia's chief cleric, the Great Mufti Sheikh Abdul Azziz bin Abdulah Al Sheikh, who in 2001 stated that the celebration of April Fool's Day should be forbidden altogether. We don't know if the Great Mufti had his neighbor's hijinks in mind when he decreed the ban.

2. Freeing The Prisoners

Imagine hearing that your brother or father who has been held in a filthy Russian prison for years is finally going to be released. You make the long trip to the horrid penitentiary and wait outside the prison gates, longing desperately for the moment you'll reunite with your loved one, only to hear... 'April Fools! No one's being freed!' Believe it or not this already happened to 60 families in April 2000 who have been informed that their loved ones will be released from the Vladivostok prison in Russia. They made the long trip to the penitentiary, only to learn that the paper had played an April Fool's joke on them. The authorities later published an apology.

3. The fake Deadline

Glenn Howlet's friends at London city hall believed they had dreamed up a marvelous gag. They dispatched a memo telling him that the really big important statement he was working on will be due early, in just two weeks. The tip off was that the memo was dated April first. :))) . Except Glenn didn't realize it was a bad joke. He received the memo while he was on vacation and right away cut his vacation short and called the office to tell his co-workers to start getting the job done. But as he stared the new deadline he worked himself up into an increasing state of panic, until soon he began to get heart palpitations. Finally he fell sick from the stress and was forced to take medical leave. As he was recovering in the hospital he figured out it just wasn't worth risking his health condition to finish the statement, so he applied for early retirement. At this point someone explained him the early deadline was just an innocent joke. He replied by pressing charges for damages. The first consequence of his lawsuit, was that London city hall banned employees from pulling any more pranks.
